Struggling with Flossing? 4 Reasons to Keep You Motivated

Man flossing his teeth

Every time you go to the dentist, they might bring up how often you floss. They may ask how consistent you are and offer advice on how you can keep up with it. Despite this, it’s easy to fall behind doing it. This habit might not seem like it does much for your oral health, but it actually protects it in several ways. Here are four reasons you should stick with this part of your dental hygiene routine for the long run.

1.)  Helps Remove Bacteria Between Your Teeth

When you brush, you remove plaque from the surface of your smile. After you give everything a good scrubbing, it is about 60% clean. The last 40% is done by flossing. The bristles can’t effectively reach between your teeth and underneath your gumline, but this other habit can. That way, you get rid of bacteria that can spell trouble later.

2.)  Prevents Inflammation and Gum Recession

Building off the point above, plaque and tartar buildup can cause cavities and periodontal disease. The latter is an infection in the soft tissues of your mouth, but this can be serious trouble for your oral health when left untreated.

Your gums may become noticeably red and inflamed in the early stages, but they can also recede as this condition progresses. In severe cases, tooth loss is also possible. Thankfully, flossing is a great way to prevent this from happening. You will be able to remove bacteria that lead to oral health issues in the first place.

3.)  Makes Your Dental Cleanings Faster

When you’re at your dental cleanings, they may sometimes feel like they are taking longer than they should. This is because your hygienist is making sure no stone is left unturned, and they are removing plaque all over your smile. However, by keeping up with brushing and flossing, they will have less work to do and jump to polishing your teeth sooner. That way, it’s a quicker visit in the end.

4.)  May Not Take as Long as You Think

Many people who don’t floss often say it’s because they simply don’t remember or that it takes too much time. However, like with any other habit, you will get faster at it the more consistent you are. While you might be slower at first, it should still only take a few minutes. If you tend to forget, then try setting alarms or reminders on your phone. A handy note on your mirror can also be helpful for some.

In the end, flossing can make sure your oral health stays pristine. By making sure you stick with it, you can give your teeth and gums the support they need to be strong and problem-free.
