I’m Wearing Invisalign Clear Aligners; Why Aren’t My Teeth Moving Like They’re Supposed To?

Teen thinks something over

Orthodontic treatments can bring a patient’s smile into a healthier, more beautiful alignment, but many people aren’t terribly keen on dealing with the conspicuous metal parts and eating restrictions that come with braces. Fortunately, Invisalign has allowed millions of people to reshape their smiles using removable and virtually invisible clear aligners. However, the patient will have to wear their aligners sufficiently every day for their treatment to stay on track. Here are a few reasons why your teeth might not be moving if you’re wearing Invisalign.

How Does Invisalign Work?

An Invisalign treatment begins with the orthodontist using a special scanner to create a three-dimensional map of the patient’s teeth. This data is then used to create a sequence of clear aligners designed to fit over their smile. Each set in the sequence will move the teeth into a slightly better position. These aligners are removable, allowing patients to eat whatever they want. However, the patient will have to wear their aligners for at least twenty-two hours every day and clean their teeth and aligners thoroughly each time before putting them back in.

Why Aren’t My Teeth Moving Like They Should with Invisalign?

There are several reasons why a patient’s teeth might not be moving as quickly as intended during an Invisalign treatment. In some cases, the patient is not wearing their aligners enough. Wearing Invisalign clear aligners can take some getting used to, and many people find it a little too easy to leave their aligners out for a little too long. If this becomes a habit, this lost time can add up, and your teeth may not be ready for a new set of aligners when the time comes.

In other cases, the patient has an unexpected reaction. Everyone’s body is different, and nothing can predict every bump in the road for every orthodontic treatment. Sometimes a patient has an unexpected reaction to wearing Invisalign, and their treatment plan will have to be adjusted accordingly.

If your Invisalign treatment isn’t quite on track, your orthodontic provider can help you make adjustments to get you back up to speed. Orthodontic treatments might take a lot of effort, but the results are well worth it.
